Welcome To Au Petit Hotel Québec City
Au Petit Hotel Québec City is a small family run hotel that’s been in business for over 30 years! Keep in mind, this in not your modern Hilton Hotel in Québec City. But if you want to feel like you’re in Old Town Québec City and not anywhere in the world, then there’s unlimited Québec charm at this hotel.
I will admit, the hotel can use a bit of an update but you can tell that a lot of care went into the decor. Plus, I never felt uncomfortable due to lack of cleanliness while at Au Petit Hotel (which is sometimes the case for these small hotels).

Location – Unbeatable!
The location of Au Petit Hotel is unbeatable! I mean you’re in Old Town Québec City – you’ve made it! This is the prime location to stay in Québec City. You’re in walking distance to EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING!) – you don’t need to use your car once during your stay (unless you want to leave Old Town).
The hotel is also on a cul-de-sac (dead end) street so it’s very quiet at night and you don’t have to worry about partiers keeping you up at night. Don’t worry though, it isn’t creepy to walk down either, it’s a very short cul-de-sac where you can still see the main street.

Amenities
The amenities are what you would expect from any hotel these days: you get the main things like shampoo, soap, hair dryer…etc. I was a bit disappointed with the towels though, they were a bit rough (probably air dried?). So if you’re picky about that I’d recommend bringing a packable microfibre towel (like this one from Amazon).
Because the rooms are so small, there’s a microwave and kettle in a common area for guests to use.
Parking is offered for a small extra fee (it was $10/ night for us). Hotels can charge A LOT more for overnight parking, I found $10/ night to be very reasonable for Old Québec City hotels.
The Room & Comfort
This is not your modern hotel room. Everything in the room had a purpose and was beautiful. The decor of the room and the entire hotel was beautifully curated.
I may have mentioned this already, but the room is SMALL. I repeat, the room is VERY VERY SMALL! Somehow, it fits a bed, small seating area for breakfast or work, and a wardrobe. The bathroom is small but it’s still a decent size considering the tiny room!
I was disappointed with the bed, it felt a bit below my standards for hotels. I felt so sore when I woke up the bed was so hard.
Another big negative is that you can very easily hear people in the hallway. I wasn’t sure if people could hear us in our room so it made us feel as though we had to whisper. It wasn’t as private feeling as a hotel but it was still more private than staying at a hostel.
I noticed that there was space between the door and the floor which could have been the reason for the bad soundproofing. So, I’m not sure if every room will have the same issue. It is an older building though, so the soundproofing probably isn’t the best anyway.

Cleanliness
Everything was in top top shape up to my hotel standards. Clean sheets and a clean bathroom!
Staff Friendliness
We only encountered the hotel staff for check-in, although they were very nice it wasn’t the typical small hotel accommodations I’m used to. There was no going above and beyond to tell us about Québec City and giving local recommendations – this was a bit of a disappointment.
I think it had to do with a language barrier perhaps? But I’m not sure.
Price (Value For Money) – Cheap Québec City Hotel
I think for what they’re charging it’s a very reasonable rate for an old Québec City hotel. I know it’s small, but it’s really all you need. It’s especially worthwhile if you’re only in Québec City for the night and don’t want to spend that much on a hotel but want a good location.
In October 2021, we payed $135 CAD/ night (not including parking). This was the most reasonable price we’ve ever seen for a hotel in the main area of a city.

Things To Watch Out For – Au Petit Hotel Québec City
Check in is anytime after 3:00 P.M and check out is before 11:00 A.M.. These sound like very reasonable times – BUT apparently they charge you by the minute if you’re late to check out.. a 1$ a minute!
They also charge if you have a car in the lot, but that’s only an extra $1/ hour. That’s a lot more reasonable. I don’t know how much the hotel will hold you to this, but this was on a notice in the room.
There’s also no elevator in the hotel and there aren’t any rooms on the first floor. This means you will be going up at least one flight of stairs. Pack accordingly in a small suitcase or backpack. This stairwell also isn’t exactly wide or straight… This is an old and narrow building…

I’ve also stayed at the Hilton in Québec City – which is just outside the Old Town city walls. So you are still very much within walking distance of everything. Plus, you might be able to book a room with a view of the Old Town! See room rates & availability.
The Clarendon Hotel is a very popular hotel in Old Town. Although a bit more pricier than Au Petit Hotel, it does offer a more ‘normal‘ hotel experience in Québec City. See room rates & availability.
And finally, if you’re looking for THE place to stay in Québec City, that is none other than the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. This is the most well known hotel in the city and you will have nothing but a luxurious stay here! See room rates & availability.
