Optimize One Day in Magic Kingdom (Without a Lightning Pass!)
If you have one day in Magic Kingdom, and no lightning pass, you’ve come to the right place.
I’m always so annoyed when I read guides for how to spend one day in Magic Kingdom and it’s centered around using a lightning pass. But that wasn’t an option for me when I visited. I wasn’t looking to spend more money on a single day at Disney than I already had. And I had missed my chance to buying them even if I wanted to (I booked a very last minute trip!).
So here’s how I optimized my Magic Kingdom schedule.
Psst! This blog post contains affiliate links in it which sends me a bit of extra money if you use them… at no extra cost to you!

I was thankfully travelling to Disney World with my Disney-obsessed sister and she knew all the ins and outs of the parks. She knew which rides to do and when, when was the best time to eat, snack, souvenir shop, and even go to the bathroom…!
My Magic Kingdom itinerary is less of a scheduled itinerary and more of a timing guide. The rides you go on and when will depend on the wait times when you’re visiting, and which rides you want to go on.

Tips for How to Optimize One Day in Magic Kingdom
There are a few key tricks to optimizing your time and amount of rides during one day in Magic Kingdom. For example, staying at a Disney Resort hotel, checking the app for wait times, knowing which rides to prioritize, and which rides are filler rides…
Stay At A Disney Resort Hotel
If you can, book a Disney Resort Hotel. Not only will you be staying in a themed hotel on the Disney Resort, which is always fun (even for adults!), but they also give you some park perks. The most notable perk for planning one day in Magic Kingdom is Early Theme Park Entry.
Early Theme Park Entry gives guests access to parks 30 minutes before they open to the public. This is a huge deal! It means you’ll have practically zero wait times for at least 30 minutes.

Check the App For Wait Times
A must have for one day in Magic Kingdom is the My Disney Experience App. You’ll constantly be checking the app for “up to date” wait times for each ride. This is especially convenient for knowing the wait times for rides on the other side of the park. You’ll only have to walk (or run) to them if you see a low wait time.
My partner was in charge of checking the app, and he actually broke a rib over it taking his job a bit too seriously (he walked into a sidewalk and fell…). So take that as a warning to only use it when it is safe to do so! Always be sure to look where you’re going, there are a lot of objects and people in Magic Kingdom.
It’s important to note that there is a delay in wait time updates. Often times, I arrived at a ride to find a longer wait time than what the app said. But usually it was a minimal difference and still worth waiting. So as a safety, I would always expect the wait to be a tad longer than what the app actually says. And for the most part it was pretty good in leading us in the right direction.
Pro Tip: in the morning, you’ll also want to check the app for what time the events are happening at that day, like the daily parade and fireworks show. This way, you can more easily plan your day around these events. Whether you want to be at these events, or use them to your advantage for shorter lines (but more on that in a bit!).

Know Which Rides To Prioritize: Average Wait Times
These are the most popular rides at Magic Kingdom with the longest average wait times. So if you notice they have a shorter wait time than normal, you’ll want to prioritize them.
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: This is the hottest ride right at Magic Kingdom right now. My theory is that it’s because it’s the only roller coaster in the park with a shorter height limit. This makes it very desirable to young families. 70 minutes.
- TRON Lightcycle / Run: The newest ride at the park. 65 minutes
- Space Mountain (an oldie but a goodie): 45 minutes
- Jungle Cruise (another original): 45 minutes
- Big Thunder Mountain Road: 40 minutes
- Tiana’s Bayou: 40 minutes
- Peter Pan’s Flight: I don’t know why, but this one always has a long wait time, even though it is skippable. 50 minutes.
- Haunted Mansion: 35 minutes
- The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh: Another one I don’t know why, it can also have very long wait times. The average is only 30 minutes, so you should be able to find a reasonable time.
* See updated average wait times.

What Rides At Magic Kingdom To Take Advantage with Low Wait Times
When you’re checking the app, these are the rides that you don’t ever really want to wait too long for. They are good filler rides to either pass the time, get off your feet for a bit, and wait out the long lines for other rides.
- Swiss Family Treehouse: If you’re in the area, and this has zero line walk up the treehouse. You’ll get a nice view of the castle. Don’t wait at all, you should be able to walk through it at your own pace without having a lineup.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: This is a must-do ride, especially if you’re a fan of the films (p.s. did you know the films are based on this ride!?). But you can typically find it with a lower wait time, it’s not worth waiting any longer than 15 minutes.
- Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid: An easy ride, typically with 0 minute wait time as well.
- Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover: This is a wonderful to get off your feet and see another side of the park. It’s not worth waiting in any line for, usually there is a 0 minute wait.
- Buzz Lightyear: The buzz lightyear ride seems to break down a lot. But when this happens, it means there are a lot of times with 0 minute wait until it builds up again.
- The Walt Disney Railroad: Use the train to get around the park to the different areas, and to get off your feet for a bit. They have pick up locations in Frontierland, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland
- “it’s a small world”: I wouldn’t say this ride is incredible, in fact, it’s actually a little scary. But it’s a Disney World classic and one that introduced the animatronics to the parks. It’s not worth waiting for, but it often has low wait times throughout the day. It’s convenient before fireworks because it’s behind the castle.

What You’ll Need For a Day at Disney
Your one day in Magic Kingdom planning is easier if you have a few essentials on hand….
- The Disney App: Before you trip, you have to download the free app My Disney Experience. This will be your eyes and ears for your day at the park. The key use for this app are to see the wait times for each ride. Continue reading for more details on how to use it!
- Refillable Water bottle: Disney World Orlando is HOT… pretty much any time of year you visit. But every restaurant not only has water ready to give you, they will always have a spot to refill water bottle (if they don’t you can always ask!). They want you to stay hydrated in the parks and it can get very hot standing and waiting in line. I brought a 1.2 L Thermoflask that my partner and I shared.
- Good Walking Shoes: My one day Magic Kingdom itinerary takes you all around the park – and quickly. You’re optimizing wait times, not which rides are next to each other. So you might end up going back and forth throughout the park a lot. I wear On Cloud 6 running shoes that give me an extra spring in my step, are comfortable for an entire day on my feet, and are waterproof in case it rains.
- Backpack: You’re allowed to bring a bag on all the rides with you. So bring a backpack to carry all your essentials with you throughout the day. My partner carried our Daylite Osprey backpack for the two of us. P.S. If you bring a larger backpack, you will have to go through a security check before entering the park.
- Phone Rope: if you want to take photos while you’re on the rides, I recommend having a phone rope. This attaches around you and to your phone so you can’t drop it accidentally.
- Handheld Fan: I may have already mentioned, but Florida is HOT… and some of the lines are outside. Or at least start outside. If you’re someone who overheats easily, a small handheld fan is a lifesaver.
- External battery: You will most likely be taking a lot of pictures throughout the day. The heat is also a factor that can drains your battery life faster. One day in Magic Kingdom is a very FULL and long day. You can arrive as early as 8:30 A.M. and leave as late as 12:00 A.M. You need a phone that will last you, or at least a way to recharge it on the go. I have an Inui external battery that comes with me on every trip, and one day in Magic Kingdom was no exception. Both my partner and I took advantage of using it to recharge our phones this day.

My Magic Kingdom Schedule
This is my guide to a loose Magic Kingdom itinerary to follow if you only have one day at the park.
Magic Kingdom Planning: Arrive For Opening
The key to starting off your one day in Magic Kingdom is to arrive early. Now you’ll be far from alone, but it takes a while for the lines to build up.
Remember I said to book a Disney Resort Hotel? People staying at a Disney Resort have early park access (30 minutes before it’s opened to the public). So if possible, book a Disney resort if you’re interested in making the most of your day at the park. Otherwise, the park opens at 9:00 A.M. and you’ll want to be there for when it opens.
No rides will have any wait times at 8:30 A.M., so plan in advance which ride you’ll want to go on first. I would choose one of the most popular rides at this time, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, TRON Lightcycle / Run, Space Mountain, or Big Thunder Mountain Road. If you’re lucky, you might be able to get two rides in!
Keep in mind where each ride is in the park. For example, Big Thunder Mountain Road is all the way at the back of the park, so it tends to have lower wait times for longer (people have to get there/ and don’t walk straight there in the morning!).
I wasn’t staying at a Disney Resort hotel so only arrived passed 9:00 A.M. Let’s just say, it made a huge difference. Every line was already long by the time I arrived at the park. But they were still a tad shorter than the averages, so I snuck in a shorter wait time at Space Mountain.

Check Wait Times & Explore The Park
Your next few rides will depend on where you are in the park and the wait times. If a popular ride has a low wait time, run to it! Otherwise you can typically squeeze in some short 0 minute wait times on some filler rides. During this time I did Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Swiss Family Tree House.
This is also a good time to wander through the park at a slower pace. The park is an attraction in itself, I mean, have you seen the castle!? You can actually walk through the middle of it too!
And there are so many fun photo opportunities beyond the castle too! Each area in the park has it’s own unique theme, make a point to walk through Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Main Street, and Tomorrowland. Disney has done such a good job at transporting you to a completely new location each time.

Enjoy an Early Lunch / Snack ~11:00 A.M.
I recommend stopping for an early lunch or snack around 11:00 A.M. (or earlier!) before the lunch time rush kicks in. This serves two purposes: (1) you hopefully beat the lunch time crowds and (2) it will hopefully give you lower wait times on popular rides while others are eating their lunch.
You’ve probably already worked up an appetite with waking up early, walking through the park, and standing in lines so eating earlier shouldn’t be too hard. It felt like I was always able to eat throughout the day at Disney World! But if not, you can also opt for a snack at this time instead. The goal is to try and last until your next meal or snack around 3:00 P.M.
P.S. Where To Eat At Magic Kingdom
There are tons of lunch and dinner spots throughout the park, I wouldn’t be too picky. The most convenient and time saving are the cafeteria style restaurant where you order and pick up your food. I would always just go to the closest one to where you are at the moment, they’re everywhere and all have the same quality food. It’s more the cuisine style that changes , but they always offer a few options to choose from.
I went to both the Tortuga Tavern and Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café. They were very similar and were less of a culinary experience and more about sustenance (and that’s okay too!). But don’t waste your time at one of the sit down restaurants (which you have to make advance reservations for anyway… ). They’re a lot more expensive and take away from your precious ride time!

Enjoy Less Crowds During Lunch & The Daily Parade
After your early lunch, give yourself time to digest and check your trusty apps for wait times. Try to use this time to get in your best rides of the day while everyone is eating lunch.
What’s nice is that lunch time typically leads leads directly into the daily Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade. It usually happens between 2:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M, but it’s best to always check the app for the exact time that day. This is mostly for young kids to see all their favourite characters in one spot, and to give people a break from walking.
But! While there’s a large parade at the park, there are lower wait times on popular rides… much lower! I actually used this time to meet Mickey Mouse in under 10 minutes. We just happened to be in the area so it was worth it!

Late Afternoon: Food, Souvenir Shopping, Filler Rides
You were hopefully able to enjoy some low wait times for a few hours, because now they will sky rocket. After lunch, and the parade, people rush back to the rides. So this is another ideal time to actually take a break from rides.
If you’re feeling a bit peckish enjoy a lunch, or an early dinner, or just have a snack. You can head to another one of the quick pick up restaurants for different style of food this time. Or pick up some Mickey Mouse ice creams, or a must have at the park is actually Dole Whip.
P.S. Dole whip is soft serve pineapple ice cream – and I really wish it was more widely available. It’s from the Dole Plantation in Hawaii, so you can only get it on O’ahu, or at Disney’s Magic Kingdom Aloha Isle. It’s really a no brainer then to pick one up while you’re here. If you’re travelling with at least one other person, you can easily share it too. The portions are HUGE. I shared one with both my partner and my sister, and it was plenty.

You can also use this time to do some much needed souvenir shopping in Disney… p.s. see my list of actually practical Disney souvenirs you won’t regret buying. You’ll want to go to Main Street in the centre of it all (which is very cute to walk along anyway!). There is one giant souvenir shop here that looks like it’s multiple store but it’s really all the same one long shop going down the entire street!
Otherwise, if you’re still wanting to go on another ride, you can try to see if there are any filler rides with low waits. Or I actually just bit the bullet at this time and waited an hour for Big Thunder Mountain Road. We knew we wanted to do it and we didn’t know what else to do. But we definitely waited way too long for this ride (I’m embarrassed to say we were in line for just over an hour!). So please use your time better than I did!
It is important to keep in mind though that you won’t be able to optimize every ride. Especially if there’s a ride that you really want to do, sometimes it’s just worth doing at a certain point. That was the case for Big Thunder Mountain Road. And it was my longest wait of the day so I wouldn’t say it was too bad.

Stay for the Fireworks (between 8:00 P.M. & 10:00 P.M.)
A must do during one day in Magic Kingdom is to watch the fireworks at the castle. These are the Happily Ever After fireworks and they usually happen every day (unless there are other fireworks that day). Be sure to ask (or check the app) for the update fireworks schedule the day of.
The fireworks can be between 8:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. It depends on what else is happening in the park, and the season. I visited in February and they were early, at 8:00 P.M. But in the summertime they’re usually at 10:00 P.M.
The key to seeing the fireworks though is to not drive yourself crazy over finding the optimal spot to see them. Instead, arrive with a few minutes to spare and try to stand on the edge of the crowd for an easy escape afterwards. The fireworks are very high up in the sky, and there’s a projection on the castle. So as long as you can see most of the castle and the sky, you’ll be able to enjoy the fireworks from pretty much anywhere.
You can typically get low wait times before the fireworks, as people start to shift from standing in lines to standing at the castle. I would still try to stay in the area of the castle though. For example, this is when I rode “it’s a small world”, I just walked right on to the first boat at this time!
After the fireworks, most of the rides will also have a low wait time. But you’ll want to be one of the first ones there because they will build up again. This is why you want to stand more on the edge of the crowds for a quicker path to your next ride.
And if you’re already seen the fireworks, you can skip them altogether. They are the same every night, and this becomes another prime opportunity for lower wait times on all the best rides.

Get in One (or Two) Last Rides Before Closing
Depending on what time the fireworks were on the day you visited, you can still squeeze in a few more rides afterwards.
Disney World’s Magic Kingdom only closes at 11:00 P.M. It’s the park that stays open the latest. But an insider tip is that the park staff won’t kick you out of line at 11:00 P.M. You can be the last person in line at 10:59 and they will only close the line after you.
I was too tired at this point to really take advantage of this, but it is a good way to get on one of those really popular rides with a low wait time.
