This is the only list you’ll ever need if you’re looking for day trips from Montreal.
Believe me, I’ve been there, wanting to do something every weekend and experience something new, or just to escape the city for a bit!
So hopefully you can find what you’re looking for on my list of 101+ day trips from Montreal.
I’ve included cities and towns to visit in Quebec, Ontario, and even in the United States – all within driving distance! And even specific activities from outdoor activities, to seasonal adventures, and more!

How To Go On A Day Trip From Montreal
There are a few options for how to go on day trips from Montreal, from driving to taking the train, or an organized tour. Don’t worry, I’ll go over one below.
Plan the ultimate vacation

Driving
The easiest way to go on a day trip from Montreal, is of course, to drive. If you have a car you’ll have the most flexibility with Montreal day trips.
That being say, driving is the most stressful and exhausting (for the driver especially). You’ll also have to figure out parking once you arrive at your destination – which is sometimes easier said than done.
Although, sometimes, driving will be your only option for certain day trips from Montreal.
If You Don’t Have A Car In Montreal
If you don’t have a car in Montreal, you can always rent one for the day (from Enterprise for example). Or, the city also has a few car sharing services, like CommunAuto.
Taking The Bus
Depending on where you’re heading for the day, you might be able to take the bus. Of course, you’re more restricted to their schedule, but you can at least sleep on the drive.
Taking the bus is usually a more affordable option, and better for day trips that are further from Montreal (like going to Ottawa, or even some National Parks from Montreal).
National Park Shuttle Buses
There are quite a few National parks that are reachable in a day trop from Montreal. If you don’t have a car, Nana Navette offers shuttle services to select parks – find out more here.
Taking The Train
We don’t have a perfect train system in Montreal (although they’re working on making it go out further outside the city).
It will also be the most expensive, but again, might be a better option for further day trips from Montreal so you can sleep on the way there and back.
For closer day trips from Montreal, you can look into taking the REM, or if it’s a further destination, it will be with VIA Rail.
Go On An Organized Tour
Finally, you can also go on an organized tour from Montreal. This is the least stressful way to go on a day trip from Montreal. Not only is the transportation covered, but also all your activities and schedule at your destination!
It’s an easy way to explore the surroundings of Montreal without having the stress of having to plan the day yourself. Viator offers many day trips from Montreal.
101+ Day Trip Ideas From Montreal
I’ve separated the day trips from Montreal by distance from the city. In Montreal, distance is measured by driving time, so it’s from under 1 hour to over 3 hours away by car!
Less Than 1 Hour Drive
If you’re looking for a quick, half day city escapes, these day trips from Montreal are less than a one hour drive from Montreal.
Less than an hour from Montreal you’re looking at small cities or towns, and a lot of parks with different outdoor activities (for both summer and winter escapes!).
Spend The Day At The Spa ~10 mins (+)
There are tons of spas in and around Montreal. But, if you don’t want to go too far but interested in getting off the Island head to the closest one there is – Strøm on Nun’s Island.
P.S. There are ton’s more spas further away from Montreal. If you still want to go to go to a nordic spa, there’s one all the way in Tremblant.
St. Helen’s Island (Park Jean Drapeau) ~15 mins
St. Helen’s Island is home to the famous Park Jean Drapeau (a.k.a. La Ronde). You have festivals here all year round (like Fêtes des Neiges in the winter and the infamous Osheaga in the summer).
If there aren’t any festivals when you’re visiting, you can still come here to spend the day outside – walk or bike around the island seeing a skyline view of Montreal.
Île Notre Dame (Casino, Beach…etc) ~15 mins
Île Notre-Dame is so close to the city, but it is not actually on the Island of Montreal. This is where you’ll find the casino, but if you’re traveling with the family, head to Jean Doré beach for the day instead!
You can also bring your bike and bike around the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit!
RécréoParc ~30 mins
The RécréoParc is just just across the St. Lawerence from Montreal, and the perfect spot for an easy day trip from Montreal for families. There’s a beach, with water sport rentals, and even concerts throughout the summer!

Head To The West Island – Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue ~30 mins
If you’re looking to go on a day trip from Montreal without ever having to leave the Island, head to the West Island of Montreal, mainly Sainte Anne de Bellevue. It’s about a 30 minute drive from downtown but it’s a complete change of pace from the city.
One of the best places to go (especially with the family) is to the EcoMuseum. This is an outdoor ‘zoo’ for Quebec wildlife. You can see arctic foxes, bald eagles, otters, and more!
Then, head to the town of Saint Anne de Bellevue along the water. There’s a canal to walk along, and it’s the perfect spot to sit on an outdoor terrace for lunch!

Îles-Perot (~30 mins)
L’Îles Perot is just off the West Island of Montreal. They have some beautiful parks to enjoy and in the fall you can come here for apple picking at Quinn Farms.
Chambly, Quebec – National Historic Site (~30 mins)
I love the town of Chambly, Quebec. It has a small walking street with restaurants to enjoy and a peaceful park on along the water, there’s even a fortress to explore!
This is also where the Unibroue brewery is – although you can’t tour it, you can still come here to check out the boutique!
Îles-de-Boucherville National Park ~30 mins
Iles-de-Boucherville is one of the closest national park to the city. From a picnic in the park, a walk along the water, or a bike around the different islands. You can even kayak along the water if you want!
P.S. you can even opt to turn it into a Montreal weekend trip and stay the night in one of their yurts!

Mont-Saint-Bruno National Park ~30 mins
Mont Saint Bruno is also pretty close to Montreal and offers very similar activities to Îles-des-Boucherville, including cross country skiing in the winter!
In the fall though, they even have an apple orchard to go apple picking!
Laval…
On the weekend, Laval makes ones of the best easy day trips from Montreal. There’s no shortage of things to do in Laval, that honestly, you could come back every weekend.
P.S. If you don’t have a car, you can actually take the metro all the way to Laval!
The Cosmodôme (~30 mins)
The Cosmodôme is an insane space and science museum with activities the whole family can enjoy and enrich their minds! This is the perfect rainy day activity from Montreal too (see more rainy day activities in my post)!
Laval – Nature Park (~40 mins)
If it’s a nice summer or fall day and you’d rather spend it outside, head to Laval’s Nature Park instead.
It’s a giant park with a bunch of activities – go biking, walk through the gardens or around the lake. Plus there’s a pool and always a different event happening at the park. See the full list of activities.
Vaudrieul (~40 mins)
Vaudrieul has a few things to come here for. It’s just off the Island so it’s a pretty easy day trip or even half day trip from Montreal.
If you’re looking for a unique place to come for lunch, either head to the Chateau Vaudrieul for an upscale lunch or afternoon tea experience. Or for more local vibes, hit up Patate & Persil.
If you’re visiting in the summer, a perfect family afternoon activity is Champs de Rêves – a magical exhibit of botanical structures.
Saint-Eustache (Summer Only) ~40 mins
Saint-Eustache isn’t exactly an exciting suburb off the Island of Montreal, but in the summer, it hosts a few day trip activities from Montreal!
For starters, they have the closest Lavender fields to Montreal. Pack a picnic lunch and hang out in the purple fields all day!
And, if you don’t want the fun to end, stay for sunset and head to the drive-in for a movie (unfortunately – they now only show French films…).
Mont-Saint-Gregoire: CIME Haut-Richelieu (Hike) ~ 40 mins
Mont Saint-Gregoire is one of the closest hikes to Montreal. It’s a 45 minute hike up what used to be a mining mountain – there’s still old gear stuck there and incredible rocks to scale!
Plus, if you’re hiking on a nice day you can see all the way to the Adirondack mountains in the States.

Arbraska (Ziplining) ~40 mins)
Arbraska is an action packed outdoor day trip from Montreal. Bring the family or friends to go on an obstacle course in the trees!
There are actually three locations near Montreal: Mont-Saint-Gregoire (30 mins), Rigaud (45 mins), and Rawdon (1 hour). Book your ticket.
Beloeil Quebec (Hike Mont Sainte Hilaire) ~40 mins
Beloeil Quebec is quite beautiful town with the river running through, but the main attraction is to spend the day at Mont Sainte-Hilaire. Pack a picnic lunch and get ready for a fulfilling hike!
Just make sure to book your tickets before you get there because they do sell out!
Verger Tremblay – Fruit Picking ~40 mins
Very Tremblay is a family run farm since 1945!
Throughout the summer, take advantage of the different berry picking activities at the farm (from strawberries, to raspberries, and blueberries).
In the fall, come back for traditional apple picking!
Parc Safari (~45 mins)
Parc Safari has several sections to it: a drive through safari, a walk through section to see the animals up close, and there’s even a water park! You can easily spend the entire day here with the family!
Mirabel Premium Outlets ~45 mins
If you’re looking for a good deal, drive to the outlets for a major shopping free! You’ll find stores here that we don’t have in Montreal and others that we do but with great discounts!
Québec Museum of Archeology (Pointe du Boisson) ~45 mins
If you’re interested in archaeology, this is the museum for you to visit (or if you’re with kids – they have a great interactive exhibit as well).
Even if you’re not, you should still come here for the free outdoor walk through history. It’s a short walk along the river and through the forest that takes you back centuries. You can learn about the people that originally settled here.
Super Aqua Club (Summer Only) (~45 mins)
Have the time of your life at one of the closest waterparks to Montreal. Spend the entire day in the wave pool, going down water slides, or opt for my favourite, the lazy river!
Oka, Quebec (~50 mins)
Oka is a small Quebec town with a National Park! The National Park has the usual hiking and biking trails, but it’s also home to the closest natural beaches to the city.
You can also check out the town while you’re here, find a place to stop for lunch, and find the smallest lighthouse ever! See my full guide to Oka.
Hudson, Quebec (~50 mins)
Head to Hudson for one of the activities they’re hosting, or stop at the Willow Inn for lunch. One thing is for sure, you have to check out the Sunday Farmer’s market, and Greenwood Centre for Living History (with their own antique shop!)
Old Terrebonne (Ile des Moulins) ~50 mins
Old Terrebonne is a small town in Quebec. The main attraction is Iles des Moulins – named after the water and wind mill on the island. Today, both mills are home to exhibitions that you can visit.
But, you can also just enjoy the free historical sites around the island and some gorgeous views.
In the summer, bring a picnic and your bike. In the winter, bundle up and go skating on the lake!
Rigaud, Quebec ~50 mins
Rigaud is a popular winter destination with the ski hill, but you can come here all year round to hike or for an easy getaway from Montreal for lunch.
In the spring you can also stop at the Sugar shack for a classic Quebec meal and go sugaring off!
Saint-Lazare: Parc Nature les Forestiers-de-Saint-Lazare (~50 mins)
Parc Nature les Forestier-de-Saint-Lazare is by far my favourite parks to go to from Montreal.
I swear, name any outdoor activity and they have it! Hiking, biking, and swimming in the summer. Skiing, tubing, and skating in the winter!
Brasseurs Du Monde – Sainte Hyacinthe (~50 mins)
For all the beer lovers out there, this day trip from Montreal is for you! Head to Saint-Hyacinthe to go to Brasseur du Monde. They make some of the craziest beer flavours I’ve ever tasted and they have A LOT of flavours!
In Sainte-Hyacinthe, there’s a shop and the Picoleur restaurant which serves their beers on tap and offers a tasting menu!
Parc Régional De La Rivière-du-Nord: Chutes Wilson (~50 mins)
If you’re looking for a nice walk with some water falls, head to Parc Régional De La Rivière-du-Nord to see Chutes Wilson!
You can also walk along the Petit Train de Nord while you’re here and check out the town of Saint-Jérome.
Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site (Summer Only) ~50 mins
A national historic site is just a quick drive from Montreal. The Coteau-du-Lac is the site of the first lock canal in Canada! Plus there’s even some remains of an old fort you can see!
Learn about some history of Canada here – I didn’t even mention the best part yet! It’s completely free!.
La Belle de Coteau-du-Lac ~50 mins
This is a farm with tons of activities to enjoy! In the summer choose to start your day with strawberry picking, then get lost in the immense sunflower fields, and don’t forget to pack your picnic lunch!
In the fall, the farm transforms for halloween with pumpkin picking, with a spooooky labyrinth!
Rougemont Quebec (Hike & Cider) ~50 mins
Rougemont Quebec is mainly known for the large mountain in the town – Rougemont Mountain. You can actually hike up to get a view, which I recommend doing!
The start of the hike actually starts at a cidrerie Michel Jodoin. In the fall, you can opt to go apple picking. But you can also just pick up some local cider at their shop, and even sign up for a tasting all year round!
Les Glissades du Domaine des Pays d’en Haut: Tubing (Winter Only) ~55 mins
If you don’t ski you can still take advantage of winter sports and go tubing! Get in a giant tube and ride it down the hill. Plus, you still get to experience the best part about skiing – après ski! Get your hot chocolate and sip it by the slopes!
Les Glissades du Domaine des Pays d’en Haut even gives you a choice of tubes depending on your tubing level!
P.S. don’t forget your goggles!
1+ Hour Day Trips From Montreal
A bit further away from the city, an hour to two hours drive is still a very good doable day trip from Montreal.
Salaberry de Valleyfield ~1 hr
Salaberry de Valleyfield is the perfect day trip for a change of scenery. Rue Victoria is a lovely street to walk along, stop for lunch, do some shopping, and then head to Delpha Sauvé Park for a nice stroll.
Sorel-Tracey ~1hr
Sorel-Tracey is where the Richelieu River meets the Saint-Lawerence River. The main thing to do here is to go on a cruise to the different islands to see unique wildlife. They also have a new augmented reality experience.
Saint-Joseph-du-Lac (Chemins Principal) ~1 hr
There isn’t much in Saint-Joseph-du-Lac but there’s one street that’s worth the hour drive on a day trip from Montreal.
Chemin Principal is lined with apples orchards, cideries, and even sugar shacks! Come here in the winter/ spring for sugaring off. Or head here in the fall for apple picking – you have your pick of orchards! Popular ones include Domaine LaFrance and Cidrerie Lacroix.
P.S. Cidrerie Lacroix has a gourmet experience with a constantly changing seasonal menu for brunch and dinner, make sure to pair it with a cider flight to taste!
Saint-Zotique ~1 hr
Saint-Zotique is a really cool little town in Quebec, Notre-Dame-des-Rivières area is like a mini Amsterdam with actual canals that link the homes in the area. Although it’s not very big, it’s still cool to see.
Then, while you’re here in the summer, head to the beach! You can go to Saint-Zotique Beach, or opt to go to Place du Sablon nearby which is a lake rather than a river.

Alfred Kelly Hiking (Prévost) ~1hr
Just before Saint-Sauveur is a lesser known hike, but one of my favourites! The best trail leads you to Lac des Paradis which you can continue around for different viewpoints.
There’s not a real lookout at the top, but you can also opt to hike the Mount Shaw trail for an extra workout!
Head to the small town of Prévost after for lunch or a beer at Shawbridge Microbrasserie or Les Moulins La Fayette for coffee and dessert! You can also opt to continue the fun at Restaurant Mini-Golf (and play a round of mini-putt!).

Saint-Sauveur (Depends On Traffic ~1h)
Saint-Sauveur is very similar to Mont Tremblant, but closer, and less village like. Saint-Sauveyr makes a terrific day or Montreal weekend trip!
I love coming here for lunch (shoutout to Señor Sanchez for Mexican or Restaurant Piment Thaï for Thai!). Then spend time shopping at the local shops or grab a good deal at the outlets.
If you’re looking for outdoor activities, there’s also no shortage – no matter the season! From hiking and biking, to skiing and tubing. Plus, there’s even a water park in the summertime!
Granby (Zoo) ~1 hr
In the Eastern Townships, Granby is home to one of the most popular zoos near Montreal. That’s because it’s not just a zoo – it’s also an amusement park with rides and there’s even a water park!

Bromont ~1h
Bromont is like Saint-Sauveur but closer to Montreal depending on the traffic! There’s outlet shops, or head to Old Bromont for unique restaurants and more local shopping. Plus, a mountain to ski down or hike up Mont Gale.
Rawdon (Falls & Beach) ~1h10
Rawdon is a family favourite to visit every year – during any season! It’s magical in the winter, beautiful in the fall, and a great way to spend the day outside in the summer.
In your pass, you have access to the falls, rapids, and even the beach in Rawdon!
Yamaska National Park ~1h10
Close to Granby is Yamaska National Park with every outdoor activity imaginable! Go hiking all year around or opt for one of the many water sports offered in the summer!

This was a real family favourite growing up. Come here on a hot summer days to just relax on the beach. See the full list of activities offered at the park.
Plattsburgh, NY (U.S.A) ~1h10
To most Montrealers, a day trip to Plattsburgh is not that exciting. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be!
There’s actually the town of Plattsburgh to check out – which I’ll admit doesn’t have much. But there’s a nice cafe, Chapter One, and lunch spot, The Twisted Carrot that a worth a stop at!
Plus, once you’re here it’s always worth a grocery stop for some duty free goodies!
Ausable Chasm (U.S.A.) ~1h20
Just passed the town of Plattsburgh you’ll find just possibly one of the coolest day trips from Montreal! It’s a giant chasm! You can simply walk through it, or go on one of the crazy adventure packages they offer.
Val-David Val-Morin ~1h20
Val-David and Val-Morin are cute towns in the Laurentian’s with an abundance of outdoor activities all year round!
In the summer, come here to hike the Regional Park Val-David Val-Morin. If biking or walking is more your speed, the Petit Train du Nord goes through the town – make sure to bike passed Lac Raymond (where there’s also a beach!) to bike for a bit a long the Riviere du Nord!
And in the winter, ski down my childhood (and all time favourite) ski hill: Ski Mont Vallée Bleue!

Go Cranberry Picking (Les Jardins VMO)~1h20
Les Jardin VMO don’t flood their cranberry fields, so it’s actually possible for you to pick your own from the end of September until mid October.
Mont Orford National Park ~1h20
If you’re looking for a real hiking challenge – head to Mont Orford National Park on a day trip from Montreal!
Sutton ~1h20
Sutton is my favourite town in the Eastern Townships with my favourite ski hill and favourite scones from Cafe Tintoretto (they also have their unique Dill pickle soup you can try!).
The town is very cute with restaurants, shops, and galleries. Plus there’s no shortage of outdoor activities for every season either!
Magog ~1hr20
Magog is another town in the Eastern Townships. Come here for a delicious lunch and shop along Rue Principale.
Head to Maison Merry for a bit of history. If it’s a nice day, walk through the park, head to the beach, or go to the popular hiking area: Marais de la Rivière aux Cerises. If it’s the season, you can also pack a lunch and go to Blue Lavande for lavender fields.

Although it’s still a working Benedictine Abbey, they do offer tours giving an insight into daily life.
Or if you’d prefer, combine Abbaye St-Benoit-Du-Lac with more of the Eastern Townships on this organized tour with Viator.
Nature Reserve Pointe Yamachiche ~1h20
Before Trois Rivière there’s a sneaky hike to a beach area (and bird watching hot spot!). This is the perfect beach spot if you don’t like crowds! Just make sure to not forget anything in the car, it is quite the walk back!

Village Québécois d’Antan ~1h20
Travel back in time at Village Quebecois d’Antan. Here, you can see what it would have been like to live in Quebec in the 1800s.
North Hatley (Eastern Townships) ~1h30
This is a very small, but albeit, very cute town in the Eastern Townships. Grab a bite to eat, bring your bike, or just wander through the quaint town for the day!
Or if you’re feeling bougie, head to the Manoir Hovey for a fancy lunch.
P.S. Book a guided tour to the Eastern Townships to discover more of this beautiful region in Quebec. The tour takes you to the best small towns, like Magog and North Hatley.
Stonehouse Vineyard (Winery & Alpaca Farm!) ~1h30
This small vineyard offers multiple tour and tasting options. With patios overlooking the vineyard! Plus, as a bonus, there’s an alpaca farm to check out across the street!
Dunham (Breweries & Wineries) ~1h30
Durham, Quebec but it is home to many wineries and breweries. We really like Val Caudalies – Vignoble & Cidrerie and the Dunham Brewery. But there are so many others in this area that you can choose from! Just be sure to drink responsibly and have a designated driver!
VeloVolant (Biking Through Trees) ~1h30
Another out of this world activity you can do on a day trip from Montreal is to bike through the trees. I mean, why go biking on the ground when you can literally bike in the sky!
Make it into a Montreal weekend trip and stay at one of their campsites!
Upper Canada Village (Ontario) ~1h40
Upper Canada Village was the best school trip when I was in Elementary school and still makes a great day trip from Montreal for families today. Go back in time to a living history museum. Watch ‘locals’ make wool and knead bread. Find out more here.
Montebello Québec ~1hr40
The main attraction in Montebello Quebec is the Fairmont Chateau Montebello – and I mean that lobby is to die for! If you can, try to come here for a meal and to check out the grounds (but you might have to book a room since COVID).
But, there’s also a small town to walk through (with a brewery!) and a historical houses to explore.
Park Omega ~1h40
Park Omega is a bit further, but in my mind worth the extra drive compared to Parc Safari (or even Granby Zoo). You are driving through LARGE A.F. enclosures. The animals are the ones who live here and you are entering their territory. They also only have Quebec wildlife.
P.S. don’t forget to bring large carrots to feed the animals with!

Chutes des Plaisance (Waterfall) ~1h40
Chutes des Plaisance is a historical site in the town of Plaisance. Head here to see the waterfall, but stay for a bit of insight into Quebec history!

Sherbrooke ~1h40
Sherbrooke is a larger, university town in Quebec. You can easily spend the day exploring the city. Make sure to walk along Magog River, around Lac des Nations, and even go check out Bishops University!

Mont Tremblant Village ~1h40
Mont Tremblant Village is the ultimate local place to go on a day trip from Montreal. Even though it’s a little ski village, it’s open for travel all year round!
Come here to escape the city with some outdoor activities, overpriced food, or head to one of the relaxing spas in the area! Read more of what to do in Tremblant in my summer guide.

Explore the Laurentian Mountains (including Mont Tremblant) from Montreal →
Fields Of Gold: Sunflower Field (Summer Only) ~1h40
You can do some much more than walk through beautiful sunflower fields at the Fields of Gold! Opt to pick your own bouquet of flowers, or book one of their photography spots and have your own photoshoot in the fields.
Trois-Rivières ~1h40
Trois-Rivières is one of the bigger Quebec cities close to Montreal. It’s about halfway between Montreal and Quebec City.
Walk along Rue des Forges, in the summer, enjoy lunch on one of the many terraces. Don’t forget to check out the port, and go to one of the many historical museums in the area (p.s. there’s even an old prison!).
If you have some time, head to Moulin seigneurial de Pointe-du-Lac just outside the city centre!
Ecological Park of Anse du Port ~1h50
On the other side of the Saint-Lawerence from Trois-Rivières is the Ecological Park of Anse du Port. They built a pedestrian bridge above the water, and in the trees.
This area (Nicolet), is also a great spot for bird watching.
Parc Harold F. Baldwin (Mont Pinacle) ~1h50
This is one of my favourite hikes with an amazing and very much worthwhile view at the top.
Burlington, Vermont (U.S.A.) ~1h50

On A Cranberry Tour (Fall Only) ~1h50

2+ Hours – Short Road Trips From Montreal
If you’re willing to go a bit further for a bit of a longer day trip from Montreal, here are some suggestions for day trips that are between 2 to 3 hours away from Montreal.
Mount Mansfield, VT (U.S.A.) ~2h
Mount Mansfield is the highest mountain in Vermont – but don’t worry, you don’t even have to climb to the top if you don’t want to! Take the gondola or even drive up for an out of this world views!
Moulin Michel De Gentilly ~2h
Step back into the past and go on a tour of a buckwheat mill in Quebec! You also have to make sure to grab a crêpe while you’re here!
Domaine Enchanteur (Winter Skating) ~2h
The Domaine Enchanteur is open all year round with different activities, but it’s most well known for it’s skating trail in the winter. They freeze the hiking path that takes you through tall forest trees! Now if that doesn’t beat the typical skating in a circle, I don’t know what does!
Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade (Winter Fishing) ~2h
Who knew that this small Quebec town is actually the world capital of tomcod fishing. Now you might be asking what that is! They’re just winter cod! So, why not head out on a nice winter day and try some ice fishing!? Reserve your fishing cabin!
Ben & Jerry’s Factory (U.S.A.) ~2h10
Did you know that Ben and Jerry’s is made in Vermont!? And it’s also an easy day trip from Montreal to visit the factory!

Ottawa is the ULTIMATE day trip from Montreal because it’s the capital of Canada! It’s kind of a no brainer to go at least once! I’ve gone back several times, and let me tell you from first hand experience, there’s no shortage of things to do and every season is so different in the city.
You can explore parliament, skate on the Rideau Canal, bike along the Gatineau River, or go to one of the MANY museums in the city!

If you don’t want to leave Québec, you don’t have to! On the other side of the Gatineau River from Ottawa is, well, Gatineau. Come here for views of Ottawa, and check out the Old Town (Hulles), plus they have some great museums here too!

I love small Ontario towns, life just seems so simple there! It’s a fun day trip from Montreal to head out here for lunch, a stroll through the park, and you can even check out the local aquarium!

Stowe Vermont is a bit further than Burlington. If you’re visiting in the winter, this is the ski town to go to!
But, this is also where the Von Trapp family settled (yes, the OG family from the Sound of Music!). Turn this day trip from Montreal into a Montreal weekend trip and actually stay at the Trapp Family Lodge (still owned by the family today!).
Tanger Ottawa Outlets (Shopping) ~2h30
If you’re looking for a change from the Mirabel Outlets close to Montreal, head to the Tanger Ottawa Outlets. They have some different stores, plus, everything is better when it’s from Ontario (it’s also often cheaper with less tax!).
Chelsea Québec ~2h30
Chelsea, Quebec is a quaint town near Ottawa. Although the town isn’t big, it’s home to one of the largest parks – Gatineau Park. It’s also worth checking out Old Chelsea with shops and restaurants.
If you’re willing to go a bit further out, check out the creepy abandoned Carbide Willson Ruins beside a waterfall for a neat photo op!

Gatineau Park is so large that you can spend an entire day here from Montreal just in the different sections!
It makes a great day outside no matter the season offering different seasonal activities.
Mont Megantic National Park ~2h40
Mont Megantic National Park is really known for their nighttime activities (the observatory) but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the park during the day as well. With a plethora of hiking trails to discover!
Frontenac National Park ~2h40
Similar to other Quebec National Parks, a day trip from Montreal to Fronenac National park is about embracing the outdoors! Along with hiking and biking trails, you also have boat activities on the lake!
Levis, Quebec ~2h40
Even though it doesn’t look like much today, there’s quite a bit of history in !Levis Quebec. In fact, it used to be the hub before Quebec City became the place to be.
You can check out the Old City, even visit Alphonse Desjardin’s family home (the founder of Desjardin insurance), and get gorgeous skyline views of Quebec City. While you’re here, you’ll also want to check out the Chaudière Falls just outside the city centre.
Levis Fort (Summer Only) ~2h40
Just passed the city of Levis is the Levis Fort. Although it’s only open in the summer there’s quite a bit of history to explore here!

Come here for the lake itself or the town nestled between the Adirondack Mountains. If you’re traveling with your family, make a point to check out the Magic Forest Amusement Park that just recently opened!

Learn how to ride a horse, or go on an hour trail ride at Captiva Farms. Reservation is required here.
Gananonque: 1000 Islands (Ontario) ~2h50
Ganonoque is a small town in Ontario and one of the best places to start the 1000 Islands Cruise (you can also take it from the United States or in Brockville).
On your way back you’ll also want to drive along the 1000 Islands Parkway to see even more of the beautiful islands from the road (don’t worry there are spots to stop and take picture!).
Quebec City ~2h50
Although it’s a bit on the far side for a day trip from Montreal, it’s worth a visit if you only have one day to visit Quebec City. This is the only city in North America with fortified walls still in tact. You are transported back in time in Quebec City and it’s just such a beautiful place to photograph and explore.

Wendake, Quebec (First Nations Village) ~2h50
Wendake is a First Nations Village just outside of Quebec City that I highly recommend spending the day.
There are museums that teach you about the Wendat who live here and their history. You can also try local food and sit in a historical long house!

3+ Hours – Day Trips From Montreal
3 hours is definitely pushing the upper limit for a day trip from Montreal, but it’s still doable!
Get ready for a longer day, but nonetheless worthwhile!
Montmorency Falls ~3h
If you’ve already been to Quebec City, it might be worth visiting Montmorency Falls instead – one of the tallest in North America (yes, even taller than Niagara Falls!).
Climb up to the top, zip line down, or just take the Gondola both ways! Don’t forget to stop for lunch with a view at the Manoir on top!
Saratoga Springs, NY (U.S.A) ~3h
Saratoga Springs is a small city in New York with a historic downtown. They’re really known for hot springs and horse racing. If you’re traveling at the right time, you might get to see a race – see the schedule.

Kingston, Ontario ~3h10
Kingston is the halfway stop between Montreal and Toronto. It’s a bit bigger of a city with several things to do on a day trip from Montreal. Popular attractions include the Kingston Penitentiary, Queen’s University, and a 1000 Islands Cruise.
Île D’Orleans ~3h20
Iles D’Orleans is just passed Quebec City (across from Montmorency Falls). Although there isn’t too much on the island, one day is the perfect amount of time to visit.
You get some great views of Quebec City and Montmorency Falls from here. Plus, there’s some local food stalls to check out (from apple, strawberry, and even local chocolate and nougat shops!).
Jacques Cartier National Park ~3h30
Jacques Cartier National Park is known for the river that runs through it. With a multitude of water sports, plus hiking trails with out of this world views!
Mont-Saint-Anne (Skiing) ~3h40
This is a long day trip, but I have done it for the skiing! Mont-Sainte Anne is huge! If you’re looking for a change of hills in the winter, Mont-Sainte-Anne is the hill to go to. Plus, you can always choose to stay the night and turn it into a Montreal weekend trip instead!
