Why Book The Great George Hotel In Charlottetown Prince Edward Island

Staying at the Great George hotel is all about the experience. From the friendly hotel staff to the unbeatable amenities and priceless location. There’s no better place to stay when you’re visiting in Charlottetown, PEI.

It’s definitely on the pricier side of hotels, but trust me, it’s worth it.  We even  extended our stay at the Great George hotel PEI from two to five nights. We absolutely loved this Prince Edward Island hotel (and it’s worth spending a bit more).

My Great George hotel review is based on my stay there in October 2021, let’s dive in!

Why Stay At The Great George Hotel in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island

Welcome To The Great George Prince Edward Island

The Great George is a historic boutique hotel in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island.

But this isn’t your typical hotel. The Great George actually made up of several properties at the edge of Charlottetown city centre.

A Historic Boutique Hotel

A boutique hotel is typically a smaller hotel with anywhere form 10 to 100 rooms. And on top of that, no two rooms at the Great George hotel are the same!

Each room has it’s own unique charm so it doesn’t feel like a cookie cutter hotel room.

Stay At The Great George PEI For The History Alone…

The Great George PEI is a historic hotel because these buildings were built 175 years ago

Each building has its own history, but the most historic buildings are the Pavilion and Wellington House

The Pavilion started out as one of the classiest shops in Charlottetown but, that didn’t last long. And so for the last 165 years, it has always been some form of a hotel!

The Historic Wellington House is even more interesting. It’s one of the many detached buildings you can book in that are part of the hotel. It’s actually the oldest part of the Great George Hotel and was the first to building on the street.

The Wellington House is considered the “un-official parliament“. It was the setting for many social events during the 19th century, including where the first discussions about forming Canada happened.

Today the Great George hotel is owned by the Murphy family, who seem to own everything in the maritimes… no seriously, read more about them here.

The Historic Pavilion is the lobby and main part of the hotel with the most rooms. You’ll come here to check in and for breakfast and happy hour (which are both included with your stay!). This is also the only building in the hotel with an elevator!

The Classic King Room In The Historic Pavilion

The Classic King room is in the main building of the hotel – the historic Pavilion. I was very happy to be in the main building of the hotel.

First, it’s the only building with an elevator making it very easily accessible. Plus, we didn’t need to walk outside every morning just to get breakfast

The lobby is also george-ous (see what I did there!?). It’s the perfect place to debrief at the end of the day before going up to your room.

The Classic King room itself is a very nice size, fitting a king bed, desk, lounge area, dresser and TV. I didn’t feel cramped or overwhelmed as I normally do in hotel rooms. It’s also beautiful decorated.

But I think the bathroom might have been the best part of the hotel. The floors were heated! I repeat! The floors were heated!  I think I have to install these at home now.

The Classic King Room was the perfect home away from home in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island!

Why Stay At The Great George Hotel In Charlottetown Prince Edward Island?

The Great George is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at, here’s why!

Location, Location, Location

Anywhere you stay in Charlottetown is most likely a good location. It’s a small city – like really small!

But considering how small Charlottetown is, The Great George is somehow in prime location. It’s two blocks away from Queen Street (the main street in downtown Charlottetown).

You’re a block away from the wharf to your left and a block away from Province House on your right. Not to mention you’re a walk away from Victoria Row and Food Hall.

The only thing that is a bit far is Brighton Beach Lighthouse, which would be about a 25 minute walk, which longer but is still doable!

Sparkling Clean & Very Comfortable!

The Great George hotel was the best sleep I’ve ever had on vacation! The bed wasn’t to soft or too firm, I don’t know how they found such a good bed to be honest!

My only issue were the pillows. They were quite large and stiff which made the comfortable bed a bit less comfy. If you’re picky about your pillow, you may want to bring your own.

The hotel room was also very well sound proofed. Typically you can hear people in the hallway but I never heard a thing!

The room was also sparkling clean. The bathroom, bed, sitting area, and carpet. I couldn’t find anything to complain about!

The Friendliest Hotel Staff You’ll Ever Meet!

You don’t realize it, but hotel staff are very important to making or breaking your stay. They’re the first and the last impression you have at any hotel.

From the moment we walked in, we couldn’t feel more comfortable at the Great George Hotel in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island.

I’m someone who asks a lot of questions about the area – I like to know the hidden gems and best spots to eat. The staff could not have been more helpful. They answered all my questions and gave great advice for what to do in Charlottetown and even Prince Edward Island (p.s. see my top 10 in Charlottetown here!).

But it wasn’t just at the front desk that you felt welcomed. The breakfast staff were also exactly who you wanted to speak to every morning. It was the perfect way to start your day!

Unbeatable Hotel Amenities

The amenities at the Great George PEI are what really makes this hotel stand out.

They offer the basic 24 hour reception, fresh linens and toiletries.

But then they go above and beyond by offering amenities that hotels normally charge for – for free! I’m talking free coffee and tea all day! It was amazing to come back from a long day out, or even after dinner, and sit in the lobby with a warm cup of tea.

They also give you free cold water bottles if you ask (it’s important to stay hydrated on vacation!). Plus freshly baked cookies every afternoon for a nice sweet pick me up!

Oh and did I mention that parking is also included? That’s right there’s a lot next to every hotel building with free parking just for hotel guests.

These are just few of the nice-to-haves while on vacation that make you feel more relaxed while travelling.

Delicious Breakfast & Happy Hour Included

This is not the complimentary breakfast you’re used to at most hotels. Like with everything else about the Great George Hotel being done with so much love, the morning breakfast is no exception.

You have a choice of cold options that are the same every morning like bread, cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and fresh fruit.

But every morning they’ll also offer two hot dish options. It can be meat, eggs, potatoes, or even a sweet treat like French toast. We were there for five nights and didn’t see the same hot dish twice.

Some of the staff even baked their own desserts from home to share with hotel guests at breakfast.

If you’re staying at the Great George hotel for a few nights you can speak to the staff about specific dietary restrictions. For example, they had delicious overnight oats and mentioned they could make some with almond milk instead!

A nice surprise during the week was happy hour between 5:00 and 6:00 P.M..

You can choose between a glass of wine or one of the Gahan House beers to try (a Prince Edward Island Brewery).

This was a nice perk after touring for the day to come back and enjoy in the beautiful lobby. Also it gives you something to do before heading out to dinner in Charlottetown.

Free Walking Tours Offered At The Great George

Whenever I’m visiting a new city I LOVE going on a walking tour. Walking tours give you a good taste of the history of a city and local insider tips on what to do!

So to make staying at The Great George even better, they offer their own free walking tour hotel guests.

I didn’t get to enjoy this perk because it’s been temporarily on hold during COVID-19

Efforts In Going Green

It’s no secret that travelling isn’t great for the environment. To help make the hotel a bit more eco-friendly The Great George offers guests the option to skip the cleaning service.

If you do, they’ll give you a $10 voucher to eat at one of the Murphy restaurants. Some restaurants included are Gahan House, Brickhouse and Prince Edward Island Brewery.

The Great George Hotel Review: Final Thoughts

There’s no debating it. You need to stay at the Great George hotel next time you’re in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island.

They take hotel to the next level, making your stay as perfect as possible. You feel comfortable from the moment you step through the doors.

You can tell that everything at the hotel is done with love and with the hotel guests in mind.

Plus, it’s a nice bonus to stay somewhere that has so much history in the city if Charlottetown. I don’t think I’ve stayed in such an old building before.

Although it can be pricier, take advantage of travelling during the shoulder season for a discount (that’s what we did).

And remember, there’s also a lot included in your stay, like breakfast, happy hour, and free walking tours. This makes the price difference between the Great George and less expensive hotels a bit more balanced.

Other Hotels In Charlottetown Canada

Another well rated boutique hotel in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island is the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites. Although it doesn’t have the same historical charm as the Great George, it does offer a unique PEI stay. It’s a bit further outside the city centre, but like I said, it’s a very small city. The main perk of the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites is that they offer apartments with full kitchens. This makes it ideal for longer stays. See availability on Booking.com here.

If you’re looking for more of a hotel experience, check out the Rodd Charlottetown. It also has some history in Charlottetown too. This is apparently where Queen Victoria stayed here when she visited Prince Edward Island. See availability on Booking.com here.

For a typical Maritimes experience, stay at a bed and breakfast like the Shipwright Inn (funny enough we booked half our stay here but cancelled it to stay longer at the Great George!). See availability on Booking.com here
