What Matcha To Buy For Matcha Recipes?

To make these recipes, you’ll obviously need to get some matcha. There are so many different qualities so it can be hard to know which one to buy.

I don’t recommend using ceremonial grade for these recipes because you’re mixing it with other ingredients. So you’re going to want to look for a decent culinary grade matcha

I buy my matcha from Tealyra, and love it! I find they sell some of the best matcha at a modest price. They have a few different culinary grade qualities you can choose from based on your price range.

P.S. Don’t know the difference between ceremonial and culinary grade matcha? Read more about the different grades of matcha!

how to make matcha at home, what you'll need: a bamboo whisk, a mini sifter, a traditional matcha bowl, a stainless steel tsp, and a bag of matcha powder

Do You Need A Bamboo Whisk?

If you already own a bamboo whisk, you can use it for every recipe.

But bamboo whisk is my no means a requirement. You can easily make these recipes with alternative whisking methods.

What I do recommend investing in is a mini sifter (like this one from Amazon)! This will make the world of difference for most of these iced matcha recipes. It does the best job at separating clumps before mixing the matcha.

5 Iced Matcha Recipes

1. Simple & Sweet Iced Matcha With Honey!

A simple and sweet matcha recipe is my all time favourite. I think I even like it better than having a hot matcha drink, and it’s so much easier to make!

This recipe makes 2 cups of pure deliciousness!

All you need for this recipe is 1 tsp matcha, 1 tsp honey, about 2 cups water (60 ml hot water), and a handful of ice cubes (about 1/2 cup)!

First, sift your 1 tsp matcha into a cup, and then boil the 60 ml water to 80 degrees (you don’t want to use boiling water, you’ll burn the matcha. If you don’t have a temperature controlled kettle, boil water and let it sit for a few minutes to let it cool down.

Use your preferred method to whisk matcha in 60 ml of hot water.

Once it’s properly whisked, add your honey. I add about 1 tsp, but you can add more if you want it to be sweeter.

Once you’ve mixed your honey, add your 1/2 cup of ice and fill the rest up with cold water, give it one final stir to cool down the hot water.

P.S. Make sure to add your honey when the water is hot. I’ve forgotten, and only added it after I’ve added the ice… big mistake! The honey freezes to my spoon, or stays in clumps.

2. Iced Matcha Latte (Well Matcha Cappuccino)

Who said a cappuccino can only be made with coffee? My iced matcha cappuccino is like a matcha latte, just with less milk… and poured over ice!

I don’t like when my matcha tastes too much like milk, but you can add more milk to this recipe based on your preference.

The easiest way to make this matcha recipe is with a milk frother, so I use my Nespresso milk frother. But you can use any alternative frothing and whisking method for this recipe.

This recipe makes 1 cup. You’ll need 1 tsp matcha, 1/2 cup ice, and 3/4 cup milk.

How To Make Matcha Latte Iced

If you’re using the Nespresso milk frother, add 3/4 cup milk to the frother with 1 tsp matcha. Hold down the power button until it turns blue, and then froth away! The blue indicates that it’s frothing without heating up the milk.

The Nespresso milk frother surprisingly blends the matcha very nicely too. You can, of course, sift it beforehand to better avoid clumping.

Make sure to add your milk first when making it this way though. I’ve added the matcha first sometimes just to have it stick to the bottom.

Place 1/2 cup ice into a cup, and once it’s frothed, pour the milk matcha mixture over your ice and voila!

Alternatively, you can also add everything into a mason jar and shake it up to froth the milk, or use an electric milk frother.

3.Make A Matcha Slushy!

Summers in Canada are spent enjoying Tim Hortons Iced Capps (iced cappuccinos). Seriously, we live for those! So, I thought, why not make a matcha iced capp?

You’ll need a blender for this recipe. It makes 4 cups, and fits perfectly into 2 mason jars.

Take 2 cups of ice, 3/4 cup milk (higher percentage milk is preferred but not necessary, I made it with 2%), 1/4 tsp vanilla, and 1 tsp matcha.

Put everything in your blender and blend away until all the ice is crushed into tiny pieces. It’s that simple!

It happens to mine too! The ice sits comfortably at the top while the liquid sinks to the bottom.

4. Mint Iced Matcha Lemonade

I was inspired to make this drink at home after trying it at a café in Brussels.

A mint matcha lemonade was exactly what I needed after a long day of touring the city on a hot summer day.

For this recipe, you’ll need a quarter a lemon, 1/2 tsp matcha, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup ice, and 4 mint leaves to make 2 cups. You can add more lemon, mint, and matcha to taste, but I find this is the perfect balance for me!

It’s easiest if you have a mason jar, that way you can shake it to blend and drink it all from the same glass.

Sift 1/2 tsp matcha into a cup, and squeeze the 1/4 lemon over the sifter to filter out any seeds. Add 1/2 cup of water, your 4 mint leaves, and 1/2 cup ice cubes. Shake it well!

Once it’s well mixed, top it off with the rest of your water. Enjoy!

5. Iced Raspberry Matcha Lemonade

Raspberry matcha lemonade uses frozen raspberries instead of mint leaves. I’m a huge fan of raspberries, so I decided to try this recipe out and fell in love!

You’ll need 1/4 of a lemon, 1/4 tsp matcha, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup ice, and a handful of frozen raspberries to make 2 cups.

It’s the same idea as the mint matcha lemonade where you add the ingredients to a mason jar and shake it together.
